Jakob Dylan now has a music video for the first single from Seeing Things, “Something Good This Way Comes.” The video was directed by Josh & Xander, who are apparently best known for parlaying their concept for the Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” video into an Apple commercial. The video of theirs with which I am most familiar is Cat Power’s “Where Is My Love?” My real question, though: Is Josh, Xander, or Jakob the Ramblin’ Jack Elliott fan? Check out the poster for The Ballad of Ramblin’ Jack, a documentary about the folksinger, on the left; and compare it to the image on the right from around 2:32 of the video.
This would not be the first time that Jakob used a video to pay tribute. Several of the images from The Wallflowers’ “Sleepwalker” video, directed by Mark Romanek, originated from French photographer Jean-Marie Perier’s book My Life in the ’60s. Jakob confirmed at the time, “A lot of the images, like the fish, were taken from his book, from a lot of ’60s photographs that he took. So, you know, you have to give credit where it’s due.”
(Speaking of giving credit, thanks to idiophonebox for help with the images in this post.)
